Low level light therapy
Low level light therapy (LLLT) is used in hair loss as an adjunct for hair stimulation. It allows resting hairs to re-enter the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle and promotes longer stay in that cycle (1, 2). The aforementioned has been thought to be related to LLLt’s effects on increasing hair follicle growth factors, proteins, and blood vessel flow (1). It has been used mainly in the treatment of pattern hair loss (2, 3). There have also been very few studies on its use is alopecia areata (4, 5). There are many types of devices (at home or in-office) available, with variable efficacy, depending on the person’s diagnosis, needs, comfort, and practitioner’s recommendations.
